Most people assume that organic food must be better for you simply because it comes with a higher price tag, but when it comes to what the label ‘organic’ actually means on a food item, most people have no idea.

According to the Food Standards Agency, in order for a food to be sold with the label organic attached to it the food must come from processors, growers and importers that are all approved and registered by certification bodies that are also registered by the UK Register of Organic Food Standards.

In other words, a food item has to pass through quite an inspection process before it gets that title which should make people feel slightly better about spending the extra few pounds for ‘organic’. When inspectors inspect an item to make sure that it can be deemed organic they check to make sure that there have not been any pesticides or fertilisers used and that the land it has been grown on has been farmed organically for at least two years.

All foods that are labelled as organic will also contain the name of the body that offered its certification, so if this is missing then something may be up with the so-called claim that a food item is organic.

In some cases, not all food items can be made completely organic, so manufactures that have to use non-organic ingredients are allowed to claim the organic label if the product is 95% organic. Thus, on some occasions organic food is not healthier, locally produced, or fresher just because it holds the label.

Whatever we do to take care of our gardens, the ravages of winter inevitably take their toll on our lawns. Once spring come around and we start to plan out our gardens so they look their pristine best for the summer, it is time to repair any damage the lawn has suffered and get it back looking like the luxurious, green carpet of a last year. If your lawn is particularly battered, this can seem like a daunting task, but help is at hand.

Are you ready for a lawn care revolution?
Scott’s snap spreader system make the application of lawn treatments such as fertiliser, weed treatments and grass seeds simpler than before. These kind of tools are nothing new, and there are many on the market, but the snap system used in the Scott’s system is quite unique.

The packs of treatment literally snap in and out of the spreader, delivering the exact amount where you want it, and snapping shut when you remove them to stay fresh until the next time you need to use them. These types of garden aids are a real boon to those who have difficulty in lifting heavy bags of lawn treatments, and they invariably tip into places you don’t want them during the application.

Before you start any treatments however, you should follow a few golden rules. The first cut of the season should be a notch higher than usual. This removes the brown tips that the winter weather has left behind, as well as making sure that the grass isn’t chewed in anyway with the ground being so soft. The recent warm spell has encouraged weed growth too, and these need addressing first.

Once the grass is cut and the weeds dealt with, it is time to apply the required treatments, and as long as you follow these steps in the right order come the summer, you will once again have lawn to be proud of. A lush, green lawn is the perfect centrepiece in any garden, and you can spend a fortune on plants and ornaments, but if your lawn isn’t up to scratch, that is a lot of money down the drain.

Since you won’t simply be visiting for a short time, then it’s time to get your Brooklyn insider guide to truly making your new city a home.

Get to Know Your Neighborhoods

Every real Brooklynite knows his or her favorite neighborhood. Raising a young family? Head on over to Park Slope. Interested in hipster hedonism? Then Williamsburg is certainly for you. Need a super cheap ethnic enclave to call home? Then Bedstuy will certainly do. With an ever groing number of flights to New York from around the world, now is the right time to head on over and claim your own favourite neighborhood.
Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to be fashionable and eco-friendly as some of the top designers in Europe showcasing their work at the London Fashion Week have proved that mouth watering fashion can be completely green. The following are just a few of the top eco-fashion brands to take a closer look at.

As the name denotes, Beyond Skin pride themselves on creating shoes, handbags and clothing items that are ethically sound without any harm coming to animals. From shoes that look like pure suede and leather without any actual animal parts contained within, these styles are easy to love.

Those who love colour, signature cuts, and classic looks will absolutely adore the collections of Sarah Ratty under the label Ciel, where Ratty proves that looking elegant and remaining ethical do not have to be two separate issues.

It should come as no surprise that Bono’s range with his wife appears on the list, but the simple fact of the matter is that the EDUN label creates some great street chic fashions and, even better, offers them for affordable prices so even non-celebrities can afford to be eco-fashionable.

With a brand slogan that reads ‘we are conscious of how we create style’ you would expect nothing less than chic stylish organic clothes from Kuyichi, and you would be absolutely right. Perhaps the most stunning celebrity fashion example of eco-fashion is Stella McCartney who has proved for decades that there are plenty of ways to create top-notch fashions without using animal products.

The Dior show still went on even though John Galliano was not in attendance for the event, given the fact that he has been dismissed. Prior to his models hitting the runway, Chief Executive for Dior Sidney Toledano gave a speech in which he said that he was sad to see that the Dior name has been brought down with the many statements that have been made about the designer. Therefore, he said that the company is going to work hard to demonstrate the high values that built the house of Dior.

Despite the controversy, Dior was still forced to let their models on the catwalk in the Galliano designed lines which prove that although his personal life may be questionable, he does know a few things about design. Of particular note were a few wispy dresses that looked straight out of a fairy tale book but were pretty sheer for a winter line.

In stark contrast, also debuting on the catwalk was a stunning white striped wool coat that was tailored and mid length and paired with a brilliant nude sheer dress to make a stunning ensemble. Those that want to bundle up a bit more however may want to turn their attention to the knee length boots paired with trousers and a large oversized fur coat that seemed to take over the stage and most attendees’ attention. In fact, fur was a common accompaniment on the catwalk this year, suggesting that despite its own moral questionability, fur may be back again this winter.

Amsterdam can be a great place to head if you want to get away for a quick weekend, given the fact that it offers plenty in the way of nightlife, museums, and of course it’s well known watercourse. One of the best ways to start your weekend off is to jump on a canal cruise which will not only allow you to easily get around town, but will also allow you to see more of the city than you might if you use any other form of public transportation. While travelling, you can stop by the Anna Frank House, Van Gogh museum, and the nine streets which the cruise stops at.

When night rolls around you can easily head out to the clubs, given the fact that Amsterdam is a wonderful place to head for a night out on the town. The restaurants are also a large part of what makes the city unique as there are neon signs everywhere advertising quick foods such as pizza or you can simply window shop through the many menus hanging outside of the sandwich shops. Make sure to also see the Royal Palace and the Dam Square as they are perfect examples of the Amsterdam flair.

Right now the trend is to be green, which means that if you have not yet learned how to shop for green products it is a good time to learn. This is due to the fact that without the proper knowledge you cannot be sure that the items you are purchasing are truly eco-friendly or are just marketed to make you think so. Many marketers are cleverly using green colours and trendy packaging to make you think that their cheaper products are environmentally friendly so you have to be on the constant alert when making a purchase to make sure you are getting what you really want.

The best way to approach eco-shopping is with an open mind and a few key phrases in mind. For instance, fair trade products and organics are almost always the better choice for the environment so these make better choices. Other considerations include packaging that is recyclable, and products that do not use any chemicals, pesticides, or any other manmade materials in their factories which should be on the label. Remember while out shopping that plastic carry bags are also not eco-friendly, so before heading out make sure to grab your own reusable cloth bag to carry your items home inside.

When many people think of Paris as the city of lights and love, they also think of a city that is full of glitz, gloss, and class, but most of the time this all comes with a price; however, you can enjoy all that Paris has to offer without spending thousands of pounds. In fact, Paris has plenty to offer those who visit it, including plenty of free and low cost natural attractions and historical sites so that you can easily get around the city and enjoy everything that the city has to offer.

One of the best ways to start is by strolling down the River Seine as it is a great way to get around the city and is home to plenty of attraction scenic sights. During your trip you will be able to see the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Eiffel Tower both of which have reasonable admissions so that you can stop and tour the famous landmarks.
With eco-friendly initiatives growing by the day there are now many eco-friendly jobs available to those with specific skills and even those in need of general labour jobs, depending on where you live. Many of the new jobs are structured around creating a green transportation infrastructure in Britain which means that as a result there are plenty of jobs in construction and road work available across the country. This has been a huge boost for many local economies and is something that those without jobs may want to look into as the job security is reasonable given the large amount of work left to be done.

At the same time, there are also plenty of jobs being created at local eco-friendly companies such as those that create solar panels, sell solar power, electric car repair, and the many other innovative companies that have sprung up as the eco movement gains momentum. Due to the many new companies that the eco movement has helped create there literally are thousands of opportunities to find jobs that are within the eco friendly climate for those who are willing to do a little looking around and investigation on their own.

If you are thinking about updating the look of your living room a bit then one of the first places you should start is by taking a look at new sofas. This is because if you change the furniture you will immediately change the tone of the room helping you take your first step towards getting a new look that is refreshing and modern in the room. Of course, when it comes to furniture it is only logical to start with the sofa since this is the one piece that the rest of the room is often situated around.

There are a few things that you need to consider when you start shopping around for sofas, starting with the size and shape of sofas that you are looking for. There are simple three or four seat sofas that are one block of space, and then there are wrap around sectionals that remove the need for other furniture or love seats all together. In addition there are also corner sofas by Fashion4Home that fill corner spaces quite well whilst creating a more sociable environment in the living room. Therefore, you need to think about if you want to just invest in one large sofa or if you want to purchase a smaller sofa so that you can also add smaller elements of furniture to the room.

Another thing that you need to consider is the type of fabric that you want your sofa to be made out of because sofas come in many different types of fabrics and the material that you choose will change the look of the room and the overall comfort of the chairs. Some people like the cool feel of fabrics such as leather against their skin, but if the room that you are planning to put the sofas in is a bit ‘cold’ then a warmer fabric such as cotton or a good mixed fabric may be a better choice.
